A friend recently bought a hookah and asked me — “how does this thing actually work, anyway?” As I started to explain the technical side of it, how to light it, the proper technique, etc. — he interrupted me. “No, no, I mean why is this thing so great? What’s the point of it all?”

Never one to shy away from making my friends feel better about their recent purchases, I came up with these 5 essential reasons why he should be happy with his recent hookah purchase. And here they are.

#5: You Appear Objectively Cool While Smoking One.

The modern person has difficulty finding a way to smoke a cigarette and somehow transpose the act of doing that into an increase in their social status. Back in the 1960s this wasn’t so hard, really — you just popped that cigarette in there, and instantly looked like James Dean. Now, not so much. But sitting around, relaxing with a hookah?
