Isn’t it great that diaper bags have come such a long way from the way they used to look years ago? Gone are the days of mere practicality and here are the days of chic style and understated elegance. Functionality is no longer the central key for modern Moms when they begin their search for a new diaper bag. Now they expect good styling mixed with modern technologies that cover their every need. Despite the vast array of bags available, they still fall into a selection of categories that I’ll outline for you below.

First comes The Messenger: The Messenger has an interesting history in the mailing bag, which of course is where the name ‘Messenger ‘ comes from. They commonly have a large selection of pockets that are easily accessible when you are wearing the bag. No problems here for Dads as they frequently have a look that both sexes will find comfortable using. If you’ve never seen them, then perhaps a good comparison would be made to a laptop bag, which is why they are ever popular with both sexes. They’re really practical bags but they have a cool look too.

Next up is The Backpack. Easy to imagine what a backpack looks like although there are differences from a standard backpack, and a backpack diaper bag. Those differences will be found in the specialty fabrics and things such as thermal bottle holders and included diaper mats. They’re very good for leaving your hands free, but a usual criticism is that they fall way short in terms of style. None the less, if you’re considering buying more than one bag this could be worthy of your consideration.

The Designer bag is of course the most fashionable of all diaper bags. The main emphasis for a bag of this design is to appeal to the fashion fraternity. They really do look quite fabulous and in many ways look similar to the common clutch purse. An added bonus is that they often sling over your shoulder too. These bags are all about looks, and not so much about functionality, although they have their place because sooner or later you’ll be wearing a dinner dress again but this time with your beautiful new baby coming with you. At those times you won’t want to carry a backpack!

And finally, The Stroller. Once again the name is the key to the style as this bag is ultimately aimed squarely at being hung to a stroller. Their long handles fit over the bars of the stroller and afford quick access to the bag whilst pushing the stroller. These are popular bags because Dads seem comfortable using them too.

And there we have it. The above styles are not a complete list of what’s available as designers are constantly developing new styles that often bridge one style to another, but as a rough guide you can be safe thinking about these four main categories. Because the styles are often so different from each other, many modern Moms are no longer simply investing in one bag. It would be a very smart bag indeed that covered every base, and so modern Moms often buy more than one. There’s a really sensational variety of color, print types, fabrics, and styling to choose from and once you know your requirements you will have a lot of fun and excitement making your choice. The practical side will keep you occupied with anti-bacterial linings that are brightly colored so you can find your accessories easily, alongside things such thermal bottle holders that often come in multiples. Even the bag closure mechanisms are varied and range from magnetic buttons (very slick) to Velcro snaps. Take your time when choosing as it’s not as simple as you would expect, and think through your primary needs and the lifestyle you lead, and then choose the bag that best meets those requirements.
