Quite a few manufactures have decided to make the move to the Internet and now offer easy access to options such as Nibo lighters and many other quality brands out there. However, if you decide to purchase a lighter online (or through a paper catalog), you’ll need to answer a few questions first. One of the most commonly asked questions is if your new lighter will come prefilled with butane.

Unfortunately, lighter manufacturers are prohibited from shipping lighters filled with butane by the federal government. Why, you ask? Simply put, butane is a dangerous substance and can pose a significant threat to consumers and those handling the package during the shipping process. For instance, butane is obviously flammable. If the lighter is subject to serious overheating during the shipping process, it might ignite, causing harm to the facility, the handler and other packages.

Second, butane can pose a threat if it leaks without igniting. This fuel is technically a noxious gas and, as such, can pose serious health problems to those working with and handling the packages. If the case were to become cracked and the fuel to escape during shipping, in addition to the threat of fire, there’s the threat posed by inhaling the fumes. This is obviously a poor situation for those carrying such packages and must be avoided. Thus, the government prohibits the shipment of lighters prefilled with butane.

Thankfully, you will find means to circumvent this issue. The simplest and easiest way to ensure that you can use your lighter as soon as possible is to have a canister of butane handy when the lighter is delivered. You will be able to fill the lighter with fluid, allow the fluid to warm up to ambient room temperature and then light your smokes with it. You should, however, know a few things specified by the manufacturer before purchasing any butane.

Based on the manufacturer’s recommendations, you will be able to determine what brand and type of butane will work best in your lighter. You will also be able to determine if the filler nozzle on the lighter is a standard design, or if you will need to purchase a more exotic type of canister to fill your lighter. With this information in hand, you’ll be able to start using your new lighter almost immediately and enjoying all the benefits of a high quality lighter.
