Early Homeschooling From Cradle to Kindergarten
Nov 12th, 2008 • Category: HomeschoolA lot of parents are concerned with the question of when to start homeschooling their children. What they don’t think about is that homeschooling starts very early, although most parents do not think of this early in home education as such. Almost every time you interact with your child you are educating him or her. In effect, you are homeschooling them. You are homeschooling your child each and every time you say, go over counting to ten with your child or have them recite their ABCs. A lot of parents homeschool their children in this way without ever realizing that they are doing so.
As you can see then, there is no time at which it is too early to begin homeschooling your child. There is more to homeschooling than deciding on some sort of curriculum and then teaching your child. One of the best things about homeschooling is that your child can learn according to their own interests and natural aptitude. As the educator, you have a lot of flexibility to tailor the curriculum to the needs and interests of your child. As parents, we do this naturally; but most of us don’t think to call it homeschooling.
Homeschooling can be very rewarding for both parent and child. You can read together, count, write and go on field trips to museums and other educational destinations. There’s more to education than what you’ll see in a textbook; there’s what you can learn from the world around you.
When you interact naturally with your child as a parent, you’ll be able to get a sense of their interests and aptitudes. This is a good way to help you decide on a curriculum which will work perfectly for your child. Your child can progress largely at their own pace ? something all parents already do, but homeschooling qua homeschooling is an extension of this idea.
The things you teach your child when they are still quite young can give them a foundation for their educational future, be this homeschooling or traditional classroom education. Every time you help your child to learn, even something as simple as writing a letter to their grandparents, you are helping your child build a love of knowledge and of learning which will serve them well for their entire lives.
We as a society are used to some conventions about education ? for example, children starting kindergarten at five and graduate high school at eighteen. A lot of parents choose homeschooling to let their children learn at their own pace instead. Maybe a better question is not when you should begin homeschooling your child but what the next step is ? as you can see, you’ve already started.
