A Beginner’s Guide to Woodworking
Nov 7th, 2008 • Category: CraftsWoodworking is the skill of taking a piece of wood and carving it or building it into something beautiful or practical. Wooden furniture and wooden sculptures are popular these days. A great way to improve the look of your house is to include some wooden furniture or art.
It requires a great amount of skill to make quality handmade wooden products.
There’s three basic types of wood. Softwoods come from evergreen trees. Hardwoods from deciduous trees. And man made woods like plywood. Norm Abram, John Boson, and Alvar Aalto are three master carpenters who can transform simple wood into the finest furniture.
Most modern woodworking tools are power driven. Table saws, jointers, routers, and sanders are used by both the furniture maker in his woodshop and a construction worked on the job site.
Woodworking tools have many purposes from cutting, carving, and sanding to nail guns. These days it’s hard to imagine making a piece of furniture without power tools. And all these tools are readily available in any home center.
But before operating power tools, it’s essential to understand how to use them. Lack of knowledge and training can lead to serious personal injury. Skilled carpenters take years of training to learn how to safely handle tools and to produce quality results.
In the hands of a master carpenter, all tools can make fine furniture. But the better quality of furniture and the higher level of craftsmanship, you can expect the price to be high.
