Key Concepts In Baby Formula
Jun 10th, 2008 • Category: ParentingBaby formula is what mothers should look for when they are unable to perform breast-feeding for any reason. Baby formula supplies the baby with all the nutrients that he or she would be supplied with from breast milk in order to develop. This is all done without the mother being forced to feed the baby from her own body.
There are three main versions of baby formula that can be commonly found. There are good things about each option. Convenience of preparation and price are the two biggest factors in choosing between the three. They are powdered formula, concentrated formula, and ready to feed formula.
When price is an issue powdered formula is the way to go. It is much cheaper than the other two but also takes the most effort to prepare before the baby can consume the formula. Water must be boiled and the powder is then poured in to the water. Then it must be mixed thoroughly until the powder has totally dissolved into the water. Sterile water can be purchased in order to skip the boiling stage but this will only add to the cost of the formula and is not necessary to those trying to save money.
Concentrated formula is a think liquid concentrate and is marginally easier to prepare than powdered formula. Although it is more expensive it allows the formula to be mixed with the boiled water much easier than powder. Other than that it has the same preparation steps when dealing with boiled water. When using sterile water a person would be able to make this formula on the run. Simply mix the water with the concentrate in a baby bottle, shake up, and warm if the baby is very young.
Ready to eat formula is obviously the most convenient way to feed an infant. It is done just as the name stipulates. Purchase the formula at a store and feed it to the baby. The formula should still be warmed when dealing with younger infants.
There are other versions of baby formula that could be recommended by a baby’s doctor if the baby is not able to digest standard formulas. If something like this occurs do not worry too much because it is very common. It simply means that a baby has a sensitive stomach and can not handle a certain type of formula.
No one should attempt to make baby formula at home. A baby’s system is very sensitive and if a mistake were to occur the infant could be greatly hurt. That is why making baby formula is best left up to professionals.
Sweeteners of any sort should not be added to a baby’s formula. That includes sugars and honey. Goat and cow milk should not be used as a replacement for formula, the only form of milk that a baby should be given is human breast-milk.
