Homeschool Education in the state of Maine has 2 options. One is just to operate a homeschool. The other is if you plan on operating a homeschool with atleast 2 unrelated children. The compulsory age is “7 years of age or older and under 17 years”

State Homeschool Education Requirements

Option 1: Operate a home school

  1. Attendance requirement: 175 days
  2. No requirements for qualifications
  3. Record Keeping: Keep copies of all material filed until homeschool program concludes.
  4. For Testing: Annually, either: 1) administer a standardized test, or 2) take a local test, or 3) have child’s progress reviewed by a certified teacher, a superintendent-selected local advisory board, or a home school support group that includes a certified teacher
  5. For a notice: File initial notice of intent within 10 days. Each subsequent year file letter indicating whether child’s homeschool will continue. Submit a copy to both the local school board and the commissioner of education
  6. Subjects: English, language arts, math, science, social studies, physical and health education, library skills, fine arts, Maine studies (in one grade between grade 6 and 12), and computer proficiency (in one grade between grade 7 and 12)

Option 2: Operate a home school as part of a non-approved private school that teaches at least two unrelated students

  1. Attendance requirement: 175 days
  2. For subjects: English, math, science, health, fine arts, U.S. history, Maine history, geography, government, citizenship
  3. For a notice: Annually by October 1 file letter with commissioner.
  4. Qualifications: Competent, as approved by the non-approved private school
  5. For record keeping: none
